Alcohol and your weight

Alcohol is high in calories and therefore is very important when managing your weight.

The Adams Alcohol Portion pot is a genuine solution to the confusion around sensible drinking. The pot calculates both units and portions dependent upon the % volume of alcohol of each drink. A very clever tool!

Alcohol & Weight Facts:

  1. Alcohol is considered a SUGAR. so within the Adams Piet, a maximum of 2 portions are recommended!
  2. Did you know that second to fat, alcohol has the most calories per gramme?
    • 1 g fat = 9 kcals
    • 1 g alcohol = 7 kcals
This means the higher the % volume of alcohol in your drink – the greater the number of calories!
  3. Did you know that alcohol has NO nutritional value. The advert that "Guinness is good for you" because of the iron content was a bit of a red herring: a man would have to drink over 36 pints to take in his RDA of iron for the day….great selling point, but not exactly accurate.
  4. When you mix soft drinks with your alcohol .e.g. coke or lemonade or fruit juice you’ll need to tot up more portions. Check out our soft drink listing for more details.
  5. Alcohol & Weight LOSS don’t mix. If you drink, then the effects of alcohol increasingly alter your ability to make good decisions, so it will be far more difficult to stick to your good intentions!
  6. Decreasing your alcohol intake is one of the most effective ways of reducing your blood pressure. Check out the NHS research.
  7. The Department of Health recommend that to avoid damaging your body with alcohol,
    • men should drink no more than 3-4 units a day
    • women should drink no more than 2-3 units a day.
This is already MORE than the calories for the Adams Diet, but its worth knowing! To find our how many calories in a unit you will need to take a look at the alcohol portion pot as the unit measure depends on the % volume!.
  8. The Alcohol Portion Pot is a clever tool that has done all the calorie calculations for you for each % of alcohol AND worked out how many units each portion contains. Use the Pot to teach yourself how to monitor your drinking and keep your weight in check.

How to use the pot:

  1. Look at the % volume of alcohol on your drink container
  2. Pour your drink in up to the % marker on the portion pot. THIS IS ONE UNIT.

EASY!

But – many of you will like mixing your alcohol with soft drinks, e.g. coke/lemonade, so we’ve also provided measures of a single portion (60 - 75kcals) of soft drinks too to help you!
