Age and Exercise
Am I ever too old to exercise?
Most certainly not! Exercise brings huge benefits whatever age we are. Its obvious that with age and changes to our physical abilities we will need to reduce the intensity of exercise. Have a look at our the study guide (http://www.adamsportionpot.com/physical-activity/) to see how we can make everyday activities productive. Gentle aerobic activity will benefit your heart, your circulation and your blood pressure. Physical activity will also improve your balance, mobility and mental faculties. See Age Concern’s ActivAge website. They write that, “no matter how late in life you begin to increase the amount of exercise you do, you will notice benefits.”
Comfort eating
Can the Adams Portion Pot system help me if I comfort eat?
We think so. Many many people comfort eat – both men and women - you are not alone! You will need to work through a few simple yet powerful self management tools to help you diagnose your faulty though processes and rewire them. Have a go! (go to Lifelong Weight Management and then to the left link - Controlling your eating).
Diabetes
I have diabetes – is the system suitable for me?
Definitely YES. The System has been built around key nutrition messages for those with diabetes. If in doubt – take the Portion Pot along with you to your next appointment with your nurse, doctor or dietitian and print off the “Science behind the system” page to show them.
Diabetes and Exercise
I have diabetes – what about exercise?
People with diabetes are encouraged to take exercise and the national recommendations are 30 minutes of brisk exercise on 5 days every week. However, those with diabetes will need to adhere to the guidance provided by their nurse or doctor. You will find the information available on the (PLACE LINK) useful, but we encourage you to make sure your nurse or doctor gives you particular advice based on your current health and medication.
Exercise
How much should I exercise?
The minimum physical activity that the system requires is 30 minutes of brisk activity on five days a week. When we say brisk we mean that your heart rate is elevated and you can just about hold a conversation. You can break this activity down into 3 x 10 minutes of brisk activity. To accelerate your weight loss – you can increase your physical activity. If you decide to do this, you will need to worry less about what the weighing scales say – and more about how your clothes fit.
NB: If you have a heart condition, injury or disability you must speak to your GP before taking on an exercise routine.
Exercising and increasing everyday activities (http://www.adamsportionpot.com/physical-activity/) can reduce your risk of a stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure and protect against osteoporosis and diabetes. There is also strong evidence that it can have positive effects on an individuals mood, self-esteem, stress and anxiety levels.
Food types
Do you provide details on every type of food?
Yes - we do aim to provide an ever increasing list of foods and varieties (see http://www.adamsportionpot.com/food-portions/). However, it is better if you describe the food you are eating on your user "intake page". As you do this you will be presented with a number of options for you to select more accurately what you have eaten. If your food is not on this drop down list please simply type in your food and you will be given the option to select the food group. Please select what you feel is correct. Our system will then email the office and we will upload the correct portion quantity and food group. This will ensure you have a bespoke food list.
However... the Adams Portion Pot Weight Management System works by teaching you how to visually measure a food portion with your eyes. We therefore provide an average measure (described in pot mm, ml, or visually) of a variety of foods, e.g. rather than "cinnamon bagel" or "onion bagel" we provide an average measure, i.e. bagel (standard 85gm size) is a starchy carbohydrate and worth 3 portions.
This system will play a significant part in your long term weight-management by encouraging YOU to make judgments on whether your choice of food will have a higher or lower portion value and to visually measure size or quantity.
You can of course kid yourself and pretend that the food labeling or the Adams Portion pot System is misleading - but if you are going to manage your weight yourself -you'll have to get your head around this issue!
Foods not listed
I am trying to follow your portion measurements but find that some of the foods I normally eat are not listed. What should I do?
For food that is not listed we have a simple solution!
Just type in the food, click OK, and you will be presented with a box allowing you to select either, starchy carbohydrate, fat & sugar, protein, dairy, or fruit & vegetables. Simply click on the one you believe is correct and then the portions you feel are most accurate. An automatic email will come to the office and we will research this food, work out the portion measurement, and allocate the correct food group. As soon as we do this, your data will be corrected (if it needs to be!), and the process of a bespoke food list carries on.
Forum conditions of use.
What are the terms of use for the Forum?
Forums are great places but can be abused. Our policy is simple: we will not tolerate anything that we consider offensive and unhelpful. Nor will we allow marketing from or links to other businesses. We feel this is a fair policy and hope that you can use this facilty with confidence and respect. Thanks
My account
Can I alter my account information after I have clicked OK
No, all you can change is you daily/weekly weight, and measurements. It is very important that you are accurate with your initial measurements. If you put in less than you weigh then you will be given a weight loss projection that is innacurate. Furthermore, an accurate measurement means that you will be rewarded as you see your weight loss over time.
My Guide Weight
Having completed the information on the 'my account' page I have been given a weight that seems a little low for what I would have considered my correct weight. How do you work out a weight for all the difference body builds and conditions? It seems to me that some people are naturally heavier (more muscle?), and other very much lighter?
This is a very good question, but one that is quite easily answered. You are correct to state that people’s natural build will mean that their healthy weight will vary. If you download our BMI chart (Body Mass Index) by clicking on the 'Fed up with your weight' tab (http://www.adamsportionpot.com/fed-up-with-your-weight/) and go to your left you will see the link to download this chart. This will show you the broad spread of healthy and unhealthy weight ranges.
We have selected a weight that is slightly towards the heavier side of the normal range. However, due to this natural variation we have allowed you to put in your own target weight whilst also showing you our option as a guide. If you are anywhere in the normal and correct range, you have done well and will benefit hugely from this.
Recipe Portions
If I follow one of your recipes how will I input this to my daily intake?
Easily!
The recipe will show you under the food list how many of what portions it has per single serving (it may be a 4 person recipe). When you type the recipe name it will show in the drop down box just like all the other foods. When you click on it and then OK, the portions will be added to your portion bars below.
It's just the same as single foods except that it will allocate portions in whatever mix of food groups is correct.
